Average and grade calculator
Paste a list of numbers to get the average, median, sum and range, or enter grades with their credits or weights to work out a weighted average for a course or a term.
How to use
Choose a tab and enter your numbers. Results update as you type.
- Average: type or paste numbers separated by spaces, commas or new lines, for example a column copied from a spreadsheet. You get the average, median, sum, count, minimum and maximum.
- Weighted / grade average: enter each grade with its credits or weight. Add rows for more courses. The weighted average gives courses with more credits a bigger share.
- Any scale: it works with any grading scale, such as 0–100, 0–10, 0–20 or a 4.0 scale, as long as all grades use the same one.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate an average?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 12, 15, 18 and 20 is (12 + 15 + 18 + 20) ÷ 4 = 16.25.
What is the difference between average and median?
The average uses every value, so one very high or low number pulls it up or down. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. For 2, 3 and 100 the average is 35 but the median is 3.
How is a weighted grade average calculated?
Multiply each grade by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits. Grades of 80 (4 credits) and 60 (2 credits) give (80 × 4 + 60 × 2) ÷ 6 ≈ 73.3, not the simple average of 70.
Can I use percentages as weights?
Yes. If an exam counts 60% and homework 40%, enter 60 and 40 as weights. They don't have to add up to 100, because the calculator divides by the total weight anyway.
