Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is any group of letters or digits separated by spaces or punctuation. Words joined by a hyphen or an apostrophe, such as "well-known" or "don't", count as one word.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Both totals are shown. "Characters" includes spaces and line breaks, which is how most social networks count. "Characters without spaces" is often used for translation and print work.
How long is a 1,000-word text?
At an average of 200 words per minute it takes about 5 minutes to read, and around 8 minutes to read aloud at 130 words per minute.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is not uploaded to our server. If you close or refresh the page, the text is gone.
